Council Calling For Festival Volunteers for Lumiere 2015
6:11am 16th September 2015
Volunteer Festival Makers are being asked to get involved again as the UK's biggest light festival returns to Durham.
'Lumiere' returns to the city for the fourth time in November and will be supported by an army of Festival makers of all ages and talents.
Created by Artichoke in Durham in 2009, the event took place two years later in 2011 and then returned again in 2013 where it attracted 175,000 visitors to the area, bringing economic benefits worth £5.8m.
With support from Northumbrian Water, Durham County Council and festival producers Artichoke, they are recruiting 200 volunteers to help make this year's event the best yet.
The Festival Maker volunteering event takes place at Durham Town Hall on Wednesday 16th September at Durham Town Hall where anyone interested in helping are welcomed to come along to.
"We're hosting a special evening to meet all those who have signed up so far and anyone else, aged 18 or over, who would like to find out more about what's involved," said Julie Lavery, volunteer and skills manager at Durham County Council.
"No experience is necessary, you just need to have a friendly face and be passionate about Durham and Lumiere".
Volunteers will be expected to be available for at least two shifts during the event itself (November 12-15) and there will be a couple of meetings in the run-up to the event.
Volunteers will welcome visitors to Durham, hand out programmes, provide advice, share knowledge of the city and offer any practical help when needed; much like the Games Makers from the London Olympics in 2012.
"The Volunteers do always make a huge difference to the festival," continued Lavery.
"We can't wait for it all to begin and we want the volunteers to get the locals really involved with it.
"We always try and work with the festival makers to help get them as much out of it as the visitors do".
The Festival Maker volunteering event begins at 6pm tonight at Durham Town Hall.
