Cyclists Take On `The Beast`

6:02am 20th September 2015

Hundreds of the region's toughest cyclists prepare to tame The Beast of Durham this morning.

The 52 mile bike ride through the hills and valleys of County Durham sorts the casual riders from the dedicated cyclists.

Organiser Colin Wilkes said:

"Durham Beast is usually the last ride of the summer for a lot of people.

"They are looking to move over from the 'summer' bike and gear to the 'winter' equipment so this is the time to get the last use of the summer gear for the year."

'It is a tough course and is a great challenge for experienced cyclists to round off the summer rides."

The ride leaves Sniperley Park and Ride in the north west of Durham City and the route is a breath taking ride across the county, taking in the sights of Iveston, Wolsingham and Tow Law along the way, before returning and eventually descending to Durham.

Colin added:

"There are a couple of flat parts on route, well about half a mile altogether around Tow Law but it is all good fun."

"And as always on Big Ride events, there will be Bike Doctors, water and refreshments, St. John's and sweeper van as well as a quality shirt and other goodies for all who 'tame the Beast' this year"
