County Durham Programme Sets the Example for Tackling Stress

6:04am 22nd September 2015

A County Durham social enterprise is leading the way when it comes to helping people tackle stress and anxiety.

'Living Mindfully' works with individuals and organisations to address the strains of modern life through a range of mindfulness programmes.

The company is not only one of the longest established training organisations but is also the only one currently delivering a county wide, referral only service.

Beginning in 2009, the service was commissioned by Public Health, County Durham and Public Health, Darlington.

"We decided that we really wanted to get this out to people and we were well supported," said founder Gary Heads.

"It's been really successful so far and it's gone exactly the way we hoped it would".

In the past five years, more than 3,500 people have been referred to The Living Mindfully Mindfulness programme, which has proved so successful that it is now being spread across the region.

The programme incorporates mindfulness meditation and individually tailored instruction to provide the skills to address stress, anxiety, depression and chronic pain.

"Some people in London are not aware what we do and when they find out they are amazed," admitted Heads.

"The North-East sometimes falls behind with things like this but that's not the case here.

"The North-East is ahead of everyone else (when tackling stress and anxiety) and that is great news for the region".

Along with GP referrals, Living Mindfully runs regular introductory days, retreats and workshops for individuals, groups and organisations.
