Full Steam Ahead for Anniversary Celebrations
6:00am 23rd September 2015
The Darlington Railway Museum will be going back 190 years into the past as it celebrates a special anniversary this weekend.
Staff at the Head of Steam Museum will be in costume for the 190th anniversary of the first passenger steam train journey, which went from Darlington to Stockton in September 1825.
"We are hoping to evoke the atmosphere of that opening day 190 years ago," said Leona White-Hannant, who is the manager at Head of Steam.
"Its a free event, with lots of activities for families with children and also something for the enthusiasts too".
Final preparations are underway for the celebrations which should see hundreds flock to the birthplace of modern railways this weekend and join in the celebrations.
Visitors are also encouraged to play their part and dress in the style of the day with prizes on offer for best costumes.
"It's a very important part of Darlington's history, railways around the world have used this one as a model," continued White-Hannant.
"It all started here and if it wasn't for the innovation of Edward Pease, people from all over the world wouldnt be transported on trains.
"Please come along dressed up in costume to help it really feel like it did back then.
"It should be a really fun weekend for everybody involved".
