Work On UTC South Durham Gets Underway

Construction begins this morning on the University Technical College in County Durham.
The building at Newton Aycliffe Business Park is on course to open in 2016, with a first intake of up to 150 14-yrs olds, the UTC will create up to 40 new teaching posts.
Sunderland University, Hitachi Rail Europe and Gestamp Tallent are sponsoring the new £10 million school.
It is understood the region could to lose up to 8,500 engineering workers to retirement by 2016 leaving a vital need to educate and train highly skilled young people to join the engineering industry and to meet growing local demand.
A commitment to increase the number of girls taking up engineering opportunities will be a feature of the UTC.
Recruited from a wide catchment area across the South Durham and Tees Valley areas, students may also join at Year 12 (Sixth Form) for post-16 courses.
The total school roll in full operation will see up to 600 youngsters being educated and trained in technical skills which will significantly increase their chances of employment.
