A 30-year-old man held over the fatal stabbing of Morgan Freeman's step-granddaughter has been identified as her boyfriend.
E'Dena Hines, 33, was found lying on the street in front of her apartment in upper Manhattan on Sunday with multiple stab wounds to the chest.
Lamar Davenport, who was in a relationship with Ms Hines, was arrested at the scene before being charged with second-degree murder on Monday.
Witness Geroge Hudacko told New York media the actress and writer was screaming as she was attacked.
He said that her attacker shouted "get out, devils! I cast you out, devils! In the name of Jesus Christ, I cast you out!" as he stabbed Ms Hines.
Authorities have said the actress was stabbed 16 times.
Davenport was taken to New York Presbyterian Hospital for a psychological evaluation, according to police.
In a statement, Freeman paid tribute to Ms Hines, who was the granddaughter of the actor's first wife Jeanette Adair Bradshaw.
The actor said: "The world will never know her artistry and talent, and how much she had to offer.
"Her friends and family were fortunate enough to have known what she meant as a person.
"Her star will continue to shine bright in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. May she rest in peace."
Ms Hines studied at the Graduate Acting Program in New York and went on to teach "under-exposed youth" in Memphis, Tennessee, according to her website.
