Donald Trump Reports In Limo For Jury Duty

5:00pm 17th August 2015
(Updated 11:01pm 17th August 2015)

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was mobbed as he took time out from the campaign trail to report for jury duty in Manhattan.

Dressed in a blue suit and striped tie, the businessman was greeted by a crowd as he turned up in a limousine at the New York State Supreme Court.

Mr Trump, who is leading the polls among 17 Republican candidates for president, waved, shook hands and fist-bumped bystanders as he walked up the steps.

A court official escorted Mr Trump to a front-row seat as he arrived to join a pool of about 75 potential jurors.

Mr Trump took a selfie with a lawyer and signed a sketch artist's drawing, commenting: "Beautiful."

The real estate mogul and reality star left the court for 20 minutes to talk on his phone in the hallway.

Mr Trump was not chosen to sit on the panel, meaning he is now exempt from jury duty for the next six years.

He did not report for five previous calls to jury duty, but his campaign team says he did not receive those letters.

Michael Cohen, special counsel to Mr Trump, said the summonses were sent to an address where the businessman has never lived.

Madonna, Woody Allen, Caroline Kennedy and Spike Lee are among other celebrities who have been picked to show up in potential jury pools.

Over the weekend Mr Trump courted controversy once more by vowing to overturn a law that grants citizenship to people born in the US, as he unveiled plans for immigration reform.

He told NBC on Sunday he would like to end the constitutionally protected citizenship rights of children from any family living illegally inside the US.

"They have to go," he said, referring to undocumented immigrants.

His proposals envisage making Mexico pay for a permanent border wall as well as mandatory deportation of all "criminal aliens".

Mr Trump also wants to eliminate tax credit payments to undocumented immigrant families in the US to fund tripling the number of immigration officers.

In the most recent opinion poll of Republican voters, Mr Trump remains at the front of the field with 25% support nationally.

Republican establishment favourites such as Jeb Bush, Scott Walker and Marco Rubio all slipped in the rankings.

Party leaders are known to be dismayed by Mr Trump's popularity in the polls, despite controversial outbursts against Mexican immigrants and a female journalist.

He spent the weekend leading a rally in New Hampshire before heading to the Iowa State Fair where he offered free rides for children in his helicopter.
